Lance Bird’s watercolors are distinguished by bold contrasts of light and shadow. His compositions often lead the viewer’s eye from a foreground framing the scene, to mid-ground, and then to a bright distant point. Note his rendered water surfaces, their reflections, and that which is beneath the surface. His experiences are informed by 50+ years as an architect and decades of travel, many with his wife Jane, a retired importer. While she did her deals with shopkeepers, he perched outside recording places with sketches and words. Since retirement Lance takes annual solo trips to places like Spain, Florence and Tuscany, and California wine country. Cruising to distant shores for several weeks each year has broadened those experiences. Totally immersed in art, travels recharge his  painting enthusiasm and intensity.

Lance is honored as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects for his exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society, bestowed on just 3% of the membership.
